In the scope of the curricular unit (UC) of Advanced Production Technologies (APT), the present assignment corresponds to an evaluation component of the UC, where it is intended the analysis of a given technology, its application to a societal need and the development of a H2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 application proposal (https://ec.europa.eu/easme/en/sme-instrument). For the latter, each group must select a paper, of the bellow pool, where the technology to be explored is covered.

List of selectable papers:

  1. Chemically transformed additive phases in Mg2TiO4 and MgTiO3 loaded hydrogen storage system MgH2 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apsusc.2018.04.052
  2. Graphene-based materials and structures for energy harvesting with fluids – A review https://doi.org/10.1016/j.mattod.2018.06.004
  3. Adsorption heat pumps for heating applications: A review of current state, literature gaps and development challenges https://doi.org/10.1016/j.rser.2018.09.026

The goal is to explore and assess the technical feasibility and commercial potential of a breakthrough innovation that a potencial SME would exploit and commercialize. This will be reflected on a business plan that illustrates the state-of-the-art of the idea, the innovation and market potential of the project, as well as its feasibility in terms of time, resources, and competence.

In the scope of the assignment, to attain the above goal, groups must: i) understand the technology proposed in the paper (it is very much recommended that groups interact with the authors of the paper for a clear comprehension of the technology); ii) develop a new product proposal based on the technology described in the paper or the integration of the technology in an existing product; iii) identify and interact with at least one stakeholder, this is, identify and visit a company that can have some kind of  relationship with the new product or technology); iv) idealize a business model; v) idealize the product prototyping; and vi) develop the H2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 application (templete).

The assignment is to be done in groups 4 to 5 persons, and represents 60% of the final grade of the UC, whatever the students are in discrete evaluation or in final evaluation.

The assignment should be developed with the fulfillment of the following milestones:

M1 | March 22 | Paper Technology
Deliverable: 3 minutes video explaining the technology proposed in the paper.

M2 | April 12 | Innovation
Deliverable: 5 minutes video explaining the new product based on the technology or integration of the technology in an existing product.

M3 | May 17 | Innovation & potential
Deliverable: Poster presenting the innovation and the business plan (template).

M4 | June 5 | Full assignment presentation and discussion
Deliverable: none | 6 minutes presentation of the full assignment followed by discussion of the proposals

M5 | Day of the “Época Normal” Exam| H2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 application.
Deliverable: H2020 SME Instrument Phase 1 application (templete).

The deliverables are all placed in the public assignment web page (apt1819s2.wordpress.com). Each group is responsible for placing the required deliverable in the group page. To have access to the page, one of the group members must require it to the curricular unit professors.

Remarks

1) The deliverables, presentation and discussion above mentioned, can be either in English or Portuguese.

2) The assignment can be later reformulated, and all the deliverables handed again, in the “recurso” exams period.

Rating criteria
The work developed by the groups should express good technical-scientific quality, namely, fulfill the stated objectives in the assignment description, present knowledge about the state of the art, present the information in a rigorous and sustained way*, as well as a good critical analysis of the results obtained. Presentations and deliverables must be clear and concise. The authors of the works must present good reasoning regarding the questions and comments placed.

(*) Reference to websites and related sources should be kept to a minimum. Consider always scientific paper. Search on scholar.google.com or other similar scientific search engine

Scale of qualitative classifications and their respective numerical scales
Excellent (19-20): Completely achieved goals, perfect presentations and deliverables (or with errors of detail, but of little importance) and presentation of objective indicators of excellence: report that can easily be converted into a scientific articles or equivalent. Proposed innovation must create a “wow effect”;
Very good (17-18): Completely achieved goals and presentations and deliverables above average;
Good (15-16): generally achieved goals and correct presentations and deliverables in general, with some failures and / or omissions admitted;
Satisfies (13-14): goals partially achieved and presentations and deliverables reasonable, but with noticeable gaps;
Sufficient (10-12): objectives partially achieved and presentations and deliverables corresponding to the minimum criteria required.

Note that the UC has 6 ECTS. One ECTS corresponds to about 27 hours of workload. This means that APT has 162 hours of workload, of which 56 are of contact hours (4 hours/week, 14 weeks) and 106 hours of autonomous work. As the assignment stand for 60% of the curricular unit grade, each student should dedicate about 60 hours of autonomous work to the assignment and a group of 4, a total of 240 hour.

  1. The milestones are not meant to be rigid, but indicators of the progress that the work must have at a given moment, in order to ensure that the final work is of good quality. Having said that, I add that you can change your page and its contents at any time.
